This established small business, proudly run by a multi-generational family, specializes in a wide array of products essential for enhancing any outdoor space, from residential flower beds to large-scale commercial projects. While classified broadly as a general contractor in the sense of supplying materials for building and landscape construction, their specific expertise lies in providing the fundamental raw materials that create the foundation and finishing touches of a beautiful landscape.
The core offering of Maske's Organic Gardening revolves around bulk supplies, including various types of mulch, landscape gravel, stone, sand, and topsoil. They emphasize providing organic composted soil and mulch that is 100% free of pesticides or other chemicals, a major draw for the organic gardening community in Illinois. This focus on natural and organic materials underscores their commitment to products that are beneficial for plants and the environment. They cater to customers seeking both vibrant colored mulches to complement their aesthetics and natural products for sustainable gardening practices.
With multiple generations currently working in the business, Maske's Organic Gardening prides itself on delivering good and efficient customer service, backed by decades of experience. The business has been recognized in the community with awards, including the Decatur Regional Chamber of Commerce 2011 Micro Small Business of the Year, and their founder, Clifford Maske, is a known figure in local horticulture, having been featured on the famed WILL Illinois Gardener Show. They aim to be a trustworthy partner, providing the right product and expert advice to help Central Illinois residents achieve their landscaping goals.
However, potential customers should be aware that recent customer feedback has indicated significant concerns regarding the quality control of their bulk compost, specifically citing the presence of foreign materials like plastic and Styrofoam, as well as unwanted weeds, including the dangerous poison hemlock. There have also been serious complaints regarding property damage during delivery and perceived poor customer interaction with the owner. Customers are advised to research the recent public reviews regarding quality control before making a purchase.

What is Worth Choosing Maske's Organic Gardening?
For Central Illinois customers, choosing Maske's Organic Gardening is worth considering for the specialized access to bulk landscape materials and the wealth of horticultural knowledge available. The strong inventory of natural and dyed mulch, gravel, and stone provides the essential building blocks for any landscaping or gardening endeavor. If you are a landscape professional or a serious gardener committed to organic methods, their chemical-free products, particularly the compost and mulch, offer a valuable, high-quality material advantage over generic alternatives. Their delivery and in-store pickup options also offer essential convenience for managing large quantities of bulk product.
However, customers must exercise caution and conduct their own due diligence, particularly regarding bulk compost quality. Recent customer reviews highlighting the presence of contaminants (plastic/Styrofoam) and the significant danger of invasive weeds like poison hemlock emerging from the compost demand that buyers verify the material quality before acceptance. While the decades of experience and wide product selection are a clear draw, securing confirmation on material purity and clarifying delivery-related property damage policies before finalizing an order is highly recommended to ensure a successful and problem-free landscaping project in Illinois.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Compost alert found plastics and Styrofoam ground up in the compost. Here is a photo of just off the top of four small raised beds after a rain. This is totally true. I am still picking plastic out of this compost, three weeks later.
April 30 · Jamie Keefer***Poison Hemlock Garden Nightmare***Steer clear of purchasing bulk compost from Maske’s Organic Gardening unless you're keen on welcoming a surprise mix of volunteer tomatoes, amaranth, and even poison hemlock! Despite having ten brand new 16-foot raised beds filled with their compost, we're now battling poison hemlock emerging this spring, a seed menace that can lay dormant for up to 6 years. My temptation to leave a review last year was halted in a desire to show grace to a clearly unhappy person, but recent discovery of the danger that we’ve left with demand attention. The owner's disregard for my instructions led to compost being dumped haphazardly, causing damage to our property, including breaking several slate stones on our new path with his trailer. When I sought information on seed control measures, the owner's disrespectful response before hanging up on me was the last straw. With a customer service rating of 0/10 and the ongoing mess in our garden, this company is an absolute no-go.Attached is a visual testament to the chaos that is emerging this spring after purchasing compost from them. I’ve included images of the problematic plant, along with identifications from PlantNet, Google Lens, and my iPhone's plant ID feature. The plant, specifically poison hemlock, is confined to one area of our property, leaving no room for doubt about its origin. This reinforces the impact of the company's negligence, turning what was meant to be a thriving garden into a battleground against unwanted flora.
March 07 · L. B.Very friendly and easy to work with. Delivered what we needed same day and on a weekend. Hard to find that kind of service these days.
August 31 · Katie StanleyCompost buyers beware.Unfortunately, according to my experience the supplier of horse manuer in the compost I purchased from Maskes last year likely contains aminopyraline, an herbicide designed to inhibit broadleaf growth in grazing pastures. All 29 of the tomato plants treated with the compost last year exibited deformed growth and mosaic shaped leafs that never opened. Im not harvesting fruits from dedormed plants. Now trying to remove tainted soil.
May 18 · Carl PhilsonDue to the political signage in front of your business, I will no longer do business with you. These candidates threaten my democracy, as you do when you vote for them.
