Soilmaker Introduce
For general contractors, dedicated landscapers, and serious gardeners across Indiana, the success of any outdoor project begins at the ground level. Soilmaker, operating out of West Lafayette, Indiana, serves a specialized, foundational role in the regional contracting and landscaping community. While classified as a landscaping supply store, Soilmaker is a critical general contractor resource, supplying the bulk, high-quality soil, compost, and mulch necessary for everything from new commercial developments to raised vegetable gardens.
What makes Soilmaker particularly noteworthy is its unique, science-backed origin. The company was born from an idea planted and nurtured in a Purdue University soil laboratory, focusing on creating high-quality synthetic and specialized soils using composted materials. This academic foundation means that when an Indiana contractor or resident orders from Soilmaker, they are receiving a product developed with expertise, ensuring better performance and long-term health for lawns and gardens. This technical superiority and commitment to quality is what distinguishes them in the competitive Hoosier landscape supply market.
Soilmaker is strategically located at 3878 S River Rd, West Lafayette, IN 47906, USA. This location places them within the greater Lafayette area, a vibrant hub of activity in Tippecanoe County and the surrounding region. Their proximity to Purdue University underscores their research-backed history and technical knowledge.
Accessibility is defined not by foot traffic, but by their robust logistics. The primary service option offered is Delivery, ensuring that bulk materials—which can be over 15 cubic yards per truckload—can be dropped directly at a construction site, landscaping job, or residential address across local West Lafayette and beyond. This emphasis on efficient bulk delivery makes them an indispensable supplier for Indiana general contractors managing large-scale projects.
Soilmaker’s services are highly focused on the production and distribution of premium, bulk landscape materials. They provide the foundational components required for superior growth, drainage, and ground preparation for various applications:
- Bulk Material Delivery: Offering local Delivery of materials, typically with a 3 cubic yard minimum and the capability to transport significant volumes to job sites.
- Specialty Soil Production: Manufacturing and supplying unique soil blends, including:
- Blended Topsoil (unscreened topsoil and aged compost).
- Planter's Soil (blended topsoil with additional compost, specifically designed for container gardening and raised beds).
- Raingarden Soil (a blend of topsoil and sand engineered for optimal drainage in water features or rain gardens).
- Premium Compost Sales: Supplying Aged Compost derived from composted mixed yard debris, ideal for enriching existing Indiana soils.
- Bulk Mulch Sales: Providing various mulch options, such as Natural Brown (double ground mixed yard debris) and Prairiewood Mulch (composted natural brown wood mulch).
- Expert Product Consultation: Offering specialized guidance to customers to recommend the best soil, mulch, or blend for their specific project needs, whether it’s for vegetable gardens or major construction landscaping.
Soilmaker stands out from traditional Indiana landscape supply centers due to its specialized background and commitment to material quality, though clients should be aware of material consistency.
- Purdue University Research Roots: The company originated from a Purdue soil reclamation project, giving it a strong scientific foundation in creating effective, high-quality soil blends.
- Specialized Soil Blends: Products like Planter’s Soil and Raingarden Soil reflect a technical understanding of growing needs and environmental applications that exceed generic topsoil offerings.
- Focus on Organic Health: Customer reviews highlight the "good, rich, black soil" and the subsequent thriving earthworm populations, suggesting a product that encourages a healthy, living soil ecosystem essential for growing food.
- Efficient Bulk Delivery: The primary service model is built around prompt, efficient Delivery, which is necessary for contractors managing tight schedules and large-volume material needs across the region.
- Direct Communication: The ability to text questions and easily communicate with the owner, Jody Tishmack, allows for knowledgeable, personalized service and advice tailored to specific Indiana soil and climate challenges.
- Business Transparency: The company clearly outlines its product offerings, pricing structure (available via PDF price list), and payment method (Cash or check only), offering clear expectations to the Indiana contractor community.

For an Indiana project, whether you are a general contractor grading a new site or a homeowner starting a raised garden, choosing Soilmaker is worth it primarily for the unique quality and specialized nature of their product. The difference between generic topsoil and Soilmaker’s engineered blends, such as the nutrient-rich Planter's Soil, is substantial and directly impacts the success of growing applications, as evidenced by customer accounts of growing "huge vegetables." The science-backed approach originating from Purdue research instills a unique confidence in the material.
However, potential customers must weigh the specialized quality against potential material inconsistencies. While some clients rave about the rich soil and thriving earthworms, an honest review noted the presence of 'garbage' in a second load of planter's soil, indicating that screening consistency may occasionally be an issue, especially in a product derived from recycled materials. Therefore, Soilmaker is best chosen by Indiana customers who prioritize a rich, organic, and locally-developed soil recipe for specialized growing needs, and who may wish to inspect the material upon delivery, ensuring they receive the high-quality product the company is known for.

Soilmaker Reviews
We ordered 2 loads of planter's soil. The first load was fine so we ordered another. The second load came and at first the soil seemed fine, however we find more garbage (plastic, metal scrap, wire, etc.) the more we dig and plant. It is not suitable for growing food with this amount of waste.
September 26 · Austin FrantzAnswered all questions I had, and was able to recommend the best soil for my raised garden. Easy to work with, good pricing, quick delivery. Good, rich, black soil. I grew huge vegetables all season. One year later, my soil is still rich, and I have so many earthworms now--so you know it's good for growing! I do mix in my own compost now, too. I am very happy with Soil Maker.
