Schultz Small Engine Introduce
For homeowners, dedicated landscapers, and commercial contractors across the Portage area and wider Columbia County, Schultz Small Engine (now operating alongside Capital City Equipment Inc.) is the recognized local authority for outdoor power solutions. This establishment serves as a vital resource for Wisconsin residents, bridging the gap between needing the right tool and ensuring that equipment stays running reliably season after season. They are not a general construction contractor, but rather a specialized service dealer and supplier, often acting as a necessary "contractor" for machinery upkeep, sales, and rentals, specializing in lawn and garden equipment that keeps Wisconsin properties well-maintained.
Located conveniently in Portage, Schultz Small Engine offers a robust, full-service model that encompasses sales of new and used equipment from industry-leading brands like Husqvarna, Exmark, Toro, and Echo, alongside expert repair services and a comprehensive rental fleet. This combination makes them a one-stop-shop for everything from the consumer's small push mower to a commercial contractor's zero-turn fleet and compact construction equipment. The staff's focus is on product knowledge and professional, expert support, ensuring customers find the right machine for the demanding lawn care, forestry, and snow removal tasks inherent to the Wisconsin climate.
It is important for local users to be aware of the recent business changes. While the business is highly praised by many for its "great selection of professional and consumer equipment" and the staff being "knowledgeable of their products," a recent change in ownership has introduced some instability, as noted in customer feedback. Specifically, some clients have reported unexpected increases in prices, particularly for services like in-town pickup and delivery, as well as extended turnaround times for tune-ups under the new management. Wisconsin customers are advised to clarify all service and transport fees upfront and inquire about current turnaround times before committing to a major repair to ensure a transparent experience. Despite these recent operational issues noted by some, the core strength remains in the vast inventory, parts availability, and depth of technical repair knowledge for small engines.
Schultz Small Engine is conveniently located in Portage, WI, offering easy access for customers across the city and surrounding areas, including Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, and Lodi. The facility is situated on Thompson Street, providing a central hub for equipment drop-off, parts pickup, and showroom browsing.
The official business address and contact point is:
1110 Thompson St, Portage, WI 53901, USA
The business is committed to public accessibility, featuring a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot. On-site parking is available for all customers, facilitating the easy loading and unloading of equipment for service or sales.

For professionals and homeowners in Wisconsin, Schultz Small Engine is worth choosing because of its unparalleled depth of service and inventory for outdoor power equipment. They are a highly specialized resource, providing a level of technical expertise and parts availability that generic repair shops cannot match. The core value is reliability: having access to the authorized sales of top brands and professional-grade repairs for those brands is essential for anyone who depends on their equipment for landscaping, property maintenance, or snow removal in Wisconsin's demanding climate.
They stand out as a valuable local asset due to their diverse rental options, which allows contractors and residents to access specialized, expensive machinery like boom lifts or sod cutters for short-term projects without the high cost of ownership. While recent customer feedback suggests a need for transparency regarding new ownership's pricing, particularly for delivery, the long-standing value of their knowledgeable staff, comprehensive service menu (from 2-cycle to zero-turn repair), and wide-ranging equipment sales ultimately secures their position as the essential small engine and outdoor power equipment hub for Portage and the surrounding region.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Awesome place to work with. Knowledgeable of their products and very professional. Great selection of professional and consumer equipment and great people to work with.
April 07 · Sam BehmI recently had a frustrating experience with Schultz's Small Engine in Portage, Wisconsin, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend their services anymore. Under new ownership, the once reliable and reasonably priced business has taken a turn for the worse.Firstly, the transportation fee for my push lawnmower was initially quoted as $30 for a one-way trip, but upon delivery, I was informed that it was actually $30 each way, totaling $60 for less than five miles. This unexpected increase significantly inflated my bill, with transport costs alone making up a substantial portion of the total amount. Moreover, the turnaround time for the tune-up of my lawnmower was longer than usual, stretching to a week instead of the promised three to five days. It's disappointing to see the decline in efficiency, especially given the inflated prices.Additionally, the new ownership's decision to let go of experienced staff members from the previous management has clearly had a negative impact on both service quality and pricing. The prices have skyrocketed, particularly for in-town delivery and pickup, making the overall experience far less appealing to local customers like myself. In conclusion, my experience with Schultz's Small Engine has left me feeling dissatisfied and taken advantage of. The combination of exorbitant prices, extended turnaround times, and a decline in service quality under new ownership has led me to give them a mere two-star rating. I would advise others to seek alternative options for small engine services in the Portage area.
April 15 · Kyle LittleThe help and attitude at the front desk was great. Prices better than expected. I've seen some of the negative comments...no idea about their experience, but mine was great. I've logged and pulped half of my life, and at 65 yrs young I know someone who knows what they're talking about, and someone who doesn't. They will be my go to place for saws and saw accessories.
February 15 · Drue ErdmannI don't understand the awesome reviews. We went there and stood for awhile, because guy was helping another customer. Not a big deal, but when he was done he moved to someone else and we got someone that was clueless even though I had all model numbers and even the owner's manual which had part numbers. Other customers came and went that were greeted by the first guy. I guess it matters if you have a Y chromosome. Needless to say, I didn't get what I went there for. Very disappointed.
May 27 · JC __Always do a great job greeting as you walk in. Have the parts we need and if they don't they get them as soon as possible.
