What is most valuable about choosing this contractor is their clear specialization in effective drainage and water management. Given the risk of basement leaks and foundation damage from water runoff common in the Midwest, hiring a landscaper who understands and expertly implements solutions like buried drainage tiles is a proactive investment in your home's longevity. This technical skill, combined with a "wonderful design sense" that ensures the final result is both functional and beautiful, offers a unique value proposition.
However, as with any contractor, it is essential for clients to be diligent and communicate clearly on all aspects of the engagement. While the quality of the work itself is often praised—particularly the design and finished labor—clients should take special note of the pricing structure. Always ensure that the proposal is detailed, itemized, and includes every single element discussed, including the final cost of labor per person and any fees for initial proposals or drawings. Prospective clients should confirm all rates, particularly hourly charges, and the scope of work (e.g., whether cleanup/hauling is included) in writing before any work commences. By maintaining open, written communication on the scope and all associated costs, you can fully leverage the company’s specialized design and drainage expertise while ensuring a transparent and positive contractual experience.

July 12 · Sheila SullivanWe have been thinking about re-landscaping our home for several years. This year we set aside a generous amount to be able to get a good start on it. We live in Rantoul and wanted to stay local if we could. We called Steve Marsh, owner, and made an appointment. He charged $50 to come up with a plan (not a detailed drawing to scale but a rough drawing.) When we sat down with his proposal, he had omitted several things we had discussed. The posposal was quite pricey for what he had included (over $350 for a small maple tree!) but we were told these costs were flexible depending on what we decided to do. He said that he would re-figure the proposal. In the meantime, my husband was injured in an accident and unable to trim the low branches on the trees in our yard. He asked Steve what he would charge to trim the trees quoted us $75 an hour but promised it would not take more than an hour. That did not include hauling the branches away, however, since our city picks up branches every month we decided to have it done. Steve came with a young lady to haul the branches and pile them up near the curb and worked about 45 min. trimming the trees. He did a nice job and we were pleased - until we got the bill. He charged $150 to do the tree trimming! I called to correct the obvious error but he told me that it was $75 EACH person. I asked him if the young lady earned $75 an hour. He tried to include every cost of being in business in that extra $75 charge - including the loan on his truck! He would not flex.Because of the "hard feelings" he asked if we still wanted an altered proposal for the landscaping. I asked how much extra he would charge and he indicated that there would be no extra charge but he did not want to "waste his time" if we were not interested. Thus, I paid $50 for a proposal that was of no use and $75 for someone to haul the branches to the curb.Beware of the hidden cost of doing business with him.
