Features / Highlights
Barnes, Inc. is characterized by its large operational capacity and dedication to the community, although, like any long-standing business, customer experiences can vary widely, particularly in high-demand, high-cost service areas such as storm cleanup.
- Long-Standing Employee-Owned Business: Operating since 1981, the company has deep roots in the Madison area, with a stated commitment to excellence driven by their employee-ownership structure.
- Exceptional Team Conduct: Customers have praised individual employees for their attention to detail, kindness, and helpful attitude, as demonstrated by the employee who took the time to find and return a lost key.
- Comprehensive Service Range: They offer truly "all-season" services, a key benefit in Wisconsin, managing both summer landscaping and critical winter snow removal with their own equipment fleet (Snow Blowers, Skid Steer, Wood Chipper).
- High-Quality Visual Results: Positive feedback indicates the team delivers aesthetically pleasing outcomes, with clients noting that their finished lawns and landscapes "looked amazing."
- Transparency Concerns Highlighted: It is important for all prospective Wisconsin clients to note and discuss a significant concern raised in public reviews regarding service billing. One customer reported a substantial disparity between an initial verbal quote (estimated at $875–$1,000 for a five-hour job) and the final bill (nearly $4,000 for a job the company billed as a 3-man crew working nearly 8 hours), highlighting potential issues with cost communication, hourly rate application, and billing for travel time.
Potential clients are strongly advised to seek a detailed, written, and fixed-price quote to ensure a clear understanding of the project scope and total cost before giving approval for work to begin.

What is Worth Choosing Barnes, Inc.
For large-scale commercial property owners or residential clients in Wisconsin with diverse, year-round exterior needs, Barnes, Inc. is a powerful choice due to its scale and comprehensive service model. The primary benefit of choosing Barnes is their capacity to be a single, experienced vendor for virtually all outdoor requirements. Instead of hiring one company for Lawn Mowing, another for Patio Construction, and a third, separate contractor for Commercial Snow Removal, you can consolidate these services with Barnes, Inc.
Their long-standing history, employee-owned structure, and ability to manage complex projects like site design, hardscaping, and large-scale seasonal changeovers offer significant logistical advantages. However, it is paramount that clients, particularly those requiring emergency or hourly services like Tree Removal following a storm, take proactive steps to safeguard their financial interests. It is highly recommended that you request a clear, written, fixed-fee quote for all services prior to commencement. While the team’s service delivery is generally praised for being high-quality and professional, exercising strict diligence on billing and cost communication, as a Wisconsin consumer, is the key to a satisfactory overall experience with Barnes, Inc. for your residential or Commercial Property needs.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Kind and considerate employees. I lost my office key on a walk and was retracing my steps multiple times when one of your employees noticed me. He stopped his riding mower, got off, and asked if I was looking for something. He had found my key! I greatly appreciate his attention to detail and helpful attitude. Thank you for making my day much easier! The lawn looked amazing too!
May 14 · Maureen GrosseIf I could give zero or negative ratings to Barnes, I would. This is a company which inflates both their actual working hours and the hourly rate. It exploits customers through misleading communication.I will let the photos speak. Barnes removed the broken tree limb which fell into our neighbor's yard. You can see the moderate size of the tree limb from the before and after photos. It was shocking that Barnes billed us almost $4000 for a job of this scope. Apparently, this job took a 3-man crew nearly 8 hours to complete, and Barnes generously charges its customers $175 per worker per hour. So the accounting goes as 3 men * 7.56 hours * $175/worker/hour = $3,969, plus tax. In addition, Barnes charges the same hourly rate per worker for travel as well. The tree limb fell into our neighbor's yard during the storm on May 21. Barnes had a crew working on our neighbor's landscaping project at that time. One of their workers approached us and offered to remove the tree limb. My husband talked with the manager on the phone and was told that it would take about 5 hours at $175 per hour. We thought the price ($875 ~ $1,000) was fair so we gave the green light. We learned our lesson the hard way not to ever work with Barnes ever again when we received the $4,000 bill in the mail.
July 23 · Min LiThis is a great landscape company, they work hard and get the job done efficiently. No projects too big or too small. A company that responds to your calls and questions. Great service im happy!!!!
May 23 · Thelost coinhunterGeneral note about the 2 phase project is that it was a pretty small job that probably didn't bring in too much income for a company as large as Barnes is. They didn't hesitate to take the job.Coordinated 2 phases of a landscaping project. Upon completion of Phase 1, remove the Yews, we moved to phase 2, rockscaping.Bridget coordinated both phases. I sent her the below message after phase 2 was completed. The team you sent over this morning to Rockscape the north and east sides of my home did an outstanding job! The weather changed dramatically (cold/hot rain/wind) from beginning to end, but they held their own, even as light rain fell for a while. I expected to be satisfied with the final result, but I'm happy to say it is more like ecstatic, with the results now that everything has been cleaned up. It looks so incredible, organized, kept, AND I'll never have to trim those dang Yews again! Fall cleanup will go much quicker now that the hastas on the side of my house aren't surrounded by that snow on the mountain ground cover and WEEDS! Critters will have fewer places to hide from birds of prey and hopefully STOP building tunnels along the foundation of my home, or or in my window wells. As your team worked, you could tell they're close as they laughed often...If I had been doing the work myself, a number of expletives would no doubt have been dropped, AND, it would have taken weeks or months whereas your team got everything done in less than a day!Great work! If we weren't in this pandemic, I'd have asked you all to join me for a celebratory adult beverage in the backyard. Another time! Thanks everyone - you're a well oiled machine!
October 01 · Trevor MurrayWe had several trees and stumps removed. They were professional, curious and on time. They cleaned up everything in the yard where they worked as well as in the street where they chopped everything up. They were able to get the tress removed sooner than they originally quoted. They did a fantastic job, and I would use them again.
