Koehler Bros. Introduce
For individuals and professional contractors in the Indiana region, finding reliable sources for quality construction materials, whether for home building or exterior landscaping, is a paramount concern. Koehler Bros., located in Lafayette, IN, has been categorized publicly as a Landscaping Supply Store, suggesting it serves as a source for materials vital to general contractor projects and outdoor renovations in the area. The company's operations appear to encompass both the retail or bulk supply of materials and, based on customer feedback, the offering of specialized design and contracting services for larger landscape projects.
The general contractor industry relies on consistent service, clear communication, and professional conduct, traits that are highly valued by homeowners and developers throughout Indiana. This article is designed to provide local users with a clear and factual overview of the business, its accessibility, reported services, and a detailed summary of the public sentiment regarding its customer experience and business practices. Transparency and due diligence are crucial when selecting a local partner, and this summary aims to assist Indiana residents in making informed decisions about engaging with Koehler Bros.
It must be noted that public data search results also strongly link the given address to an antique store business, presenting a potential conflict in the primary business operation. This discrepancy means that potential clients should confirm the availability of landscaping supplies or design services before visiting the location. Despite the classification, the most detailed public information available concerns interactions related to landscaping design and sales, which provides the substance of the following review.
Koehler Bros. is situated at a key location within the Greater Lafayette area, offering local access for material pickup or service coordination.
- Address: 3120 Dayton Rd, Lafayette, IN 47905, USA
This address places the business on the east side of Lafayette, close to the Dayton area. Accessibility features are a key operational component, designed to assist customers, particularly those handling bulk materials for large projects or with specific mobility needs:
- Wheelchair Accessible Entrance: Ensuring that all customers, including contractors and individual homeowners, can enter the premises easily.
- Wheelchair Accessible Parking Lot: Providing convenient parking access for individuals with disabilities.
- Quick Visit Planning: The business is generally structured to accommodate a quick in-and-out visit, a valuable feature for busy contractors needing to pick up materials.
From a logistical standpoint, its location near major local roads is beneficial for arranging delivery services, which are a cornerstone of a functional landscaping supply operation. The ability to quickly dispatch materials to job sites across Tippecanoe County is a critical service offering.
Based on the business's classification and explicit details from customer reports, Koehler Bros. is associated with the following operational areas:
- Landscaping Supply: As a Landscaping Supply Store, the expected product range includes bulk items vital for outdoor construction and general contractor projects, such as topsoil, various types of mulch, decorative stone, gravel, and potentially bedding plants or specialized trees.
- Delivery Service: An essential service for large-scale landscaping projects, the company offers delivery of bulk materials directly to residential or commercial job sites across the service area.
- Landscape Design Services: Public feedback points to a formal design and consultation service involving a dedicated designer. This suggests the company offers planning for significant landscape renovations and installations, including developing bids for large projects (reported to exceed $150,000).
- Installation & General Contractor Services: The context of large project bids and design consultation implies the offering of full installation services—acting as a general contractor for the landscape elements, which would include coordination and execution of planting, hardscaping, and site preparation.
- Payment Flexibility: To facilitate transactions for both quick supply pickups and large project payments, the business accepts both Credit Cards and Debit Cards.
While the business offers clear logistical features, the most prominent public data available revolves around the direct customer service experience. It is necessary to detail these reports factually, allowing Indiana users to evaluate the potential contractor relationship.
Operational Highlights:
- Accessibility: Provides wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking, which is a positive feature for broad customer convenience.
- Convenience: Equipped for a quick visit experience for material procurement.
- Payment Options: Accepts major Credit Cards and Debit Cards.
Reported Customer Experience Summary (Based on Provided Reviews):
Public feedback strongly indicates significant inconsistencies in customer service and business professionalism, particularly concerning higher-end design services:
- Reported Unprofessional Communication: One customer reported a highly negative encounter when inquiring about the price of a specific item (a tree), stating they were greeted by a "very rude gentleman" who suggested they "go to Lowe's" after the customer commented on the expense. The customer specifically cited this attitude and lack of business ethics as a reason for immediately choosing to withdraw their business.
- Inconsistent Project Management: A report from a customer seeking a high-value landscape bid (over $150,000) detailed repeated issues with project management. The customer alleged that meetings were "constantly reschedule or no show," and that communication regarding the design process was misleading or inconsistent.
- Lack of Timeliness and Commitment: The same customer reported that a scheduled design was never started after a missed meeting, and alleged that a representative stated the company's business plan was to "weed out" smaller clients. The feedback implies a significant disregard for the potential client's time and project investment.
- Attitude Towards Client Base: The negative reviews collectively suggest a potential organizational culture issue where some staff may exhibit a dismissive or rude attitude toward customers, impacting the ability to transact business professionally.

When considering Koehler Bros. for either landscaping supply needs or complex landscape general contractor services, Indiana clients must weigh the known operational facts against the pervasive and severely negative reports of customer experience. On one hand, the business provides essential logistical support for local construction, including material delivery, accessibility features, and diverse payment options—all of which are convenient for a quick-visit supply store.
On the other hand, the documented customer feedback presents a stark warning regarding reliability and professional courtesy in the design and contractor service area. A general contractor relationship is built on trust, clear communication, and consistent follow-through. The reports of unprofessional conduct, missed appointments, and perceived prioritization of larger clients suggest a significant risk of project delay and poor customer service. For high-value projects, where bids can exceed $150,000, consistency and professionalism are non-negotiable requirements.
Therefore, what is worth choosing is a nuanced decision. If a client simply requires a quick pickup of readily available supplies, the location and accessibility features might be advantageous. However, for any client in the Indiana region seeking a long-term partnership or engaging in a complex, costly landscape design or installation project, the public record clearly advises extreme caution. It is highly recommended that potential customers thoroughly vet the current team, request multiple recent references from completed projects, and obtain detailed, contractual agreements on service timelines and communication expectations before committing any significant time or financial resources to the company's design or general contractor services.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We came here looking for a specific tree. We were greeted by a very rude gentleman. He said the trees were expensive and I definitely agreed.I told him we paid half that much at Lowe's.And then he very rudely said well then go to lowes. I told him that Lowe's was out of them and he said well, see now we have them. So I said well I guess I won't do a business with you since you're being rude and he said I was rude by making the comment about the cost. There was no sense in the attitude that he gave me when we were going to give them our money to purchase something we wanted. I will never do business there and I will tell everybody how bad their business ethic is. That is no way to run a business.
July 19 · Teresa LeuckIf I could give Koehler brothers negative stars I would, as they constantly reschedule or no show to meetings as shown in my attached conversations with their designer Lorne. He was on the phone with his uncle for 5 hrs when he missed the last meeting, when in truth the next day he says he’s never started the design…again. Apparently they feel Lafayette is so hard up for help they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, again see my exchange and their comments. Our previous landscape bid was over 150k, but kohler brothers business plan is to weed us out from bigger clients. Good luck to anyone who wants to deal with this company. There is a reason they keep shrinking now to apparently one person running the show. As you can see; Lorne claims kohler brothers is nothing without him, and from my experience kohler brothers doesn’t even want to be in business, they would rather we all go away so they can focus on “real” jobs. Too bad too because this company used to be something before an apparent changing of the guard.
June 05 · Robert RedmonBeen look forward to finally stop and checkout this place. So today I stopped here to have a look around. They didn't have alot to choose from mosty an abundance of the same selection of trees, perennials and small shrubs. Prices weren't that high for the plants they're selling. I did enjoy the antiques in the shop. The staff were not friendly at all and had stand-offish vibes. Need less to say I wasn't impressed.
August 04 · Vince DneioroThe Kohlers are very good and fair people. Not only do they provide landscaping services, they also have antiques of every kind. The even have a a whole building that I think was a pharmacy and soda shop, but don't quote me on that.
October 08 · Jackie Rumler (Shootingirl)Great staff with experience and the knowledge what trees, shrubs, plants will not only look but also grow together. The prices are also well worth a 5 minute drive from Lafayette. Large selection and open on Sundays till 4:00 helps also. Thanks
